Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities
Through our work with Milwaukee County departments we provide services that make County programs, services, and facilities accessible to people with disabilities.
We make information accessible through:
Sign language interpreting, providing auditory listening devices, producing materials in alternative formats, providing telephone information and referral services, and publishing Handy-NEWS & NOTES newsletter.
We support employment for people with disabilities by:
Providing workplace accommodations for Milwaukee County employees with disabilities, making employment testing accommodations available to job applicants with disabilities, referring individuals to community-based employment programs.
We support accessible recreation for people with disabilities by:
Operating the Wil-O-Way Summer Camp program, offering year-round recreation through the Wil-O-Way centers located in Grant and Underwood parks, promoting recreation programs supported by other community agencies, distributing tickets to the Admirals, Brewers, Bucks, and Wave to members of the Wil-O-Way Key Card program.
We assist people to receive transportation services provided through Milwaukee County Transit, Transit Plus, and the Department on Aging.
We help remove barriers through:
Reviewing architectural plans to make buildings more accessible, reviewing departmental procedures and recommend alternatives that support the inclusion of people with disabilities.
We receive guidance through:
The Milwaukee County Commission for Persons with Disabilities, review of consumer feedback, and by participating in community activities and organizations.
We promote the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance through:
The Director of the Office was appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Board as Milwaukee County's ADA Compliance Officer.
